اللهم بارك لنا في رجب وشعبان: Meaning, Importance, and Duas in Rajab and Shaban

Each with its own importance, the Islamic Calendar has 12 lunar months. The eighth month of the Islamic Calendar is Shaban, while Rajab is the seventh. These months are especially significant for Muslims who engage in Islamist rituals, celebrate, and often fast.

Rajab is one of Islam’s four most holy months. Believers can benefit from several important Islamic events in the month of Rajab. Likewise, Shaban is also a significant month since it precedes Ramadan, the compulsory fasting month for Muslims. Preparing for the next sacred month relies importantly on Shaban month. Therefore, one should get mentally, physically, and spiritually ready to receive the wonderful benefits of Ramadan. Being Muslims, we need to realize the importance of these months and strive for spiritual growth if we are to achieve the most blessings.

To prepare for Ramadan, it is advised to increase the act of worship gradually. Muslims are recommended to perform prayers regularly and fast during these months to prepare for the spiritually intense month of Ramadan. It is also proven from a hadith that Our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to fast during the month of Shaban.

It was narrated that Aishah said:

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not fast in any month of the year more than he did in Shaban. He used to fast all of Shaban.” Sunan an-Nasa’i 2180

اللهم بارك لنا في رجب وشعبان Translation

“اَللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي رَجَب، وَشَعْبَانَ، وَبَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَان”

Allaahumma baarik lanaa fi rajaba wa sha’baana wa ballighnaa ramadan

This dua is translated as: Oh Allah! Grant us blessings in the months of Rajab and Sh’aban, and take us forth to Ramadan.

اللهم بارك لنا في رجب وشعبان Meaning

After sighting the moon of Rajab, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to read this dua (prayer). This means He used to start the preparation for the Holy month of Ramadan just after the Rajab moon was sighted. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to fast in Rajab and Shaban and focus on His worship as much as He could to enter Ramadan in the best possible way.

It was narrated from Jubair bin Nufair that a man asked Aishah about fasting, and she said:

“The Messenger of Allah used to fast all of Shaban, and he made sure to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.” Sunan an-Nasa’i 2186

It has been said that Rajab is the month to sow the seeds of good actions, Shaban is the month in which we should water those seeds and Ramadan is the month in which we reap the harvest.

Aishah said:

“The month which the Messenger of Allah most liked to fast was Shaban; indeed he used to join it to Ramadan.” Sunan an-Nasa’i 2350

This is a beautiful dua to pray as you ask for blessings in the months of Rajab, followed by Shaban and Ramadan. You pray to enter Ramadan in the best of your forms and to earn the highest rewards. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) accept our prayers and make us all witness the Holy month of Ramadan. Ameen.

اللهم بارك لنا في رجب وشعبان Hadith & Authenticity

This hadith is found in many Books of Hadiths, but it is mainly taken from Mishkat al-Masabih, and Muslims generously recite it during the months of Rajab and Shaban. In this dua, we ask Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) to prepare us physically, mentally, and spiritually to receive the blessing and rewards of the Holy month of Ramadan.

As far as authenticity is concerned, there are mixed opinions related to this hadith. Some scholars believe this hadith to be very weak. However, they believe it can still be followed as it does not teach anything against Islam and asks for something good. Through اللهم بارك لنا في رجب وشعبان hadith, Muslims ask for infinite blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) hence it is recommended to recite it.

Anas said that when Rajab came, God’s Messenger said, “O God, bless us in Rajab and Sha’ban and bring us to Ramadan.” He also said, “Thursday night is a very bright night and Friday is a shining day.” Mishkat al-Masabih 1369

Virtues of Rajab & Shaban in Islam

Both the months of Rajab and Shaban are considered sacred months in the Islamic calendar as many Islamic events take place in these months. Secondly, these months are considered the practice months of Ramadan. Many historic events also took place in these months:

Rajab

The month of Rajab is also called Rajab al-Asamm, meaning deafening and quiet, and Rajab al-Murajjab, signifying exceptional honor. These names show the importance and worth this month has for Muslims. The month of Rajab is very important since it is one of the four holy months of the Islamic calendar.

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve in the book of Allah, since the day He created the Heavens and the Earth. Four of them, they are sacred.” Qur’an (9:36)

“Time has come back to its original state which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth; the year is twelve months, four of which are sacred. Three of them are in succession: Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Al-Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar, which stands between Jumada (ath-Thani) and Sha’ban.”  Sahih al-Bukhari 3197

It is often called the “month of Allah” due to its significance. Another reason for the importance of Rajab in Islam is due to the event Isra and Mi’raj, which was a night journey of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). During this event, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) descended to heaven and talked to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). The five prayers were made obligatory after this significant night.

‘Uthman b. Hakim al-Ansari said: I asked Sa’id bin Jubair about fasting In Rajab, and we were then passing through the month of Rajab, whereupon he said: I heard Ibn ‘Abbas (Allah be pleased with both of them) as saying: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to observe fast (so continuously) that we (were inclined) to say that he would not break (them) and did not observe them so continuously) that we (were inclined to say) that he would not observe fast. Sahih Muslim 1157c

One of the other significant events that took place in Rajab was the marriage of Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) parents. During the month of Rajab, Muslims engage in various acts of worship, including increased prayers, fasting, and seeking forgiveness. Many also perform Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) during this month, as it holds special blessings and rewards.

Narrated Abu Hurairah:

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There is no Fara’ or ‘Atirah.” The Fara’ is the first of the offspring that would be born to them, so they would slaughter it. The ‘Atirah was an animal that they would slaughter during Rajab to honor the month of Rajab since it was the first of the sacred months. Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1512

Shaban

Sha’ban derives its name from the Arabic word “sha’ab,” which means to disperse or separate. The eighth month of the Islamic Calendar, Shaban, is equally significant. It may not be one of the four sacred months, but Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) explained its significance in various events. In terms of worshipping, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to fast most of the Shaban.

Usamah bin Zaid said:

“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I do not see you fasting any month as much as Shaban.’ He said: ‘That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.” Sunan an-Nasa’i 2357

The 15th of Shaban is celebrated by many Muslims, who offer sweets and other food to relatives or neighbors. In the month of Shaban, Muslims often perform the Ziyarah, i.e., the visitation of Imam Hussain on the 15th of Shaban. They do so to seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and His Prophets. Fasting during this month can be seen in the life of our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and is proven by various hadiths. Ramadan is the month of obligatory fasting; hence, fasting before and after it holds great significance as well.

During Shaban, Muslims seek forgiveness for past sins and maximize the act of worship to reach their highest level of spirituality. Additionally, observing the Sunnah of fasting on the white days of Sha’ban (13th, 14th, and 15th) is highly recommended. This is a way to find the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) before entering the Holy month of Ramadan.

“When it is the night of the middle of Sha’ban, spend the night in prayer and observe a fast on that day. For Allah descends at sunset on that night to the lowest heaven and says: ‘Is there no one who will ask Me for forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there no one who will ask Me for provision so that I may provide for him? Is there no one who is afflicted by trouble that I may relieve him?’ And so on, until dawn comes.” Ibn Majah.

Best Ibadah & Worship in Rajab & Shaban

Some of the best ibadah and worships that can be done in these holy months are:

Fasting (Sawm)

Fasting is a Sunnah in the month of Rajab and Shaban as our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to fast almost regularly, especially in the msonth of Shaban.

It was narrated that Aishah said:

“One of us (women) would miss some fasts in Ramadan and she would not be able to make it up until Shaban began, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not fast in any month as he fasted in Shaban; he used to fast all of it, except a little, he used to fast all of it.” Sunan an-Nasa’i 2178

Increased Dhikr & Istighfar

Muslims are advised to seek forgiveness for their past sins to regain closeness with their religion. Muslims make as much Istaghfar and other Zikr as possible to please Allah Almighty. You can make dua reach the blessed month of Ramadan in your full spirit and make the most out of it.

Reciting Quran & Night Prayers

Reciting the Quran and Prayers are other acts of worship to follow during the months of Rajab and Shaban. Other prayers like Nafl and Tahajjud, including mandatory prayers, can be made this month. No doubt that recitation of the Quran and conducting prayers have great rewards in the life hereafter.

‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels), and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.” Riyad as-Salihin 994.

Giving Charity (Sadaqah)

We are advised to do charity (Sadaqah) during Rajab and Shaban. You can clear the debts of your close ones, feed the poor, or help anyone in need. Other than this, you can give your charity to mosques or schools. This will help for the welfare of Muslims, and this way, you can pat out to the other deserving members of your community.

“Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan – it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.” Quran (57:18).

Importance of Preparing for Ramzan in Rajab & Shaban

Ramadan is the month in which Muslims are obliged to fast for 30 days, so it can be tough for a few. Thus, Rajab and Shaban can be seen as an opportunity to reset the physical, spiritual, and mental state of a Muslim while dedicating oneself to worship and the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Rajab and Shaban are the perfect times to prepare oneself to achieve mindfulness and discipline oneself for what Ramadan offers.

If you’re looking for a way to prepare for Ramadan and fulfill acts that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) during the month in which deeds are raised, there’s no better way than following the example of our Prophet (ﷺ) and fasting in Sha’ban. You can increase your daily recitation of the Quran, as once you get used to reciting more in one day, you can maximize your worship in Ramadan. People who have remembered the Quran by heart usually recall it before Ramadan starts so they can easily recite it in their Taraweeh prayers.

The months of Rajab and Shaban are significant months for seeking forgiveness, implementing more Sunnah in our lives, increasing worship, and gaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) so that we can reap the rewards of Ramadan. Insha’Allah.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Islam gives great importance to the months of Rajab, Shaban, and Ramadan. There are unique chances for introspection, community relations, as well as for spiritual development every month. Muslims can enhance their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and expand their faith by sincerely and devotedly observing these months.

Reciting the dua “اَللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي رَجَب، وَشَعْبَانَ، وَبَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَان” is also very important. Muslims are advised to pray as much as they can, making duas ask for countless blessings and benefits during the months of Ramadan, Shaban, and Rajab. Muslims have the chance to reflect, be devoted, and be prepared to welcome the blessings of the forthcoming holy month during Rajab and Shaban.
