An individual with an average life expectancy of 75 years lives for 900 months on this planet. Of this, childhood consists of 216 months, and most of the remaining months are spent working, sleeping, eating, watching TV, and doing recreational activities.
After doing the math, we do not have much time left for what we were meant to do – pray to Allah for guidance, perform good deeds, and leave our mark as true Muslims. The sooner we realize this, the sooner we can start correcting our ways and prioritizing our time towards practising Islam.
This is exactly what we learn from the Duas of Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). They teach us not to ignore any opportunity granted to us by Allah to perform good deeds and ask Allah for mercy and guidance. Instead, we must bury shortcomings and wrongdoings under a mountain of righteousness to be blessed in this world and the Hereafter.
Quranic Duaein of Hazrat Musa from the Holy Quran
Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is mentioned most frequently in the Holy Quran. The story of Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), Moses, is exceptionally inspiring; from his birth to his migration from Egypt, every time he was in grave danger, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) rescued him.
Here are some beautiful Quranic duaein recited by Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
1. Wanting to See Allah – Surah Al-A’raf
When Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) asked Allah Al-Mighty to show Himself to him, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) narrates this incident in Surah Al-‘A’raf as follows:
“And when Musa arrived at Our appointed time, and his Lord spoke to him, he said, ‘My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You.’ So [Allah] said, “You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me.’ But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level, and Musa fell unconscious.”
After Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) woke up, he recited the following Dua:
سُبْحَانَكَ تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers.”

2. Accidentally Killing a Man – Surah Al-Qasas
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Holy Quran:
“One day, he (Musa) entered the city unnoticed by its people. There he found two men fighting: one of his own people and the other of his enemies. The man from his people called to him for help against his foe. So, Musa punched him, causing his death. Musa cried, “This is from Satan’s handiwork. He is certainly a sworn, misleading enemy.”
Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then recited this extremely humble Dua which Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) accepted:
رَبِّ إِنِّى ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِى فَٱغْفِرْ لِى فَغَفَرَ لَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
رَبِّ بِمَآ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَىَّ فَلَنْ أَكُونَ ظَهِيرًۭا لِّلْمُجْرِمِينَ
“My Lord! I have definitely wronged my soul, so forgive me.” So, He forgave him, for He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. “My Lord! For all Your favors upon me, I will never side with the wicked.”
Recite this Dua:
- For protection from enemies and wrongdoers
- To overcome oppression
- To ask for Allah’s forgiveness
3. The Incident of the Golden Calf – Surah Al-A’raf
Once when Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was away, a man named Saimiri misguided and enticed his people to make a golden Calf for worship. This incident is narrated by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) in Surah Al- A’raf as follows:
“In the absence of Musa, his people made from their golden jewellery an idol of a calf that made a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to nor guide them to the Right Path? Still, they took it as a god and were wrongdoers.”
The people later realized their wrongdoing and were remorseful for having gone astray. When Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) returned, he was furious at what his people had done:
“Upon Musa’s return to his people, totally furious and sorrowful, he said, “What an evil thing you committed in my absence! Did you want to hasten your Lord’s torment?” Then he threw down the Tablets and grabbed his brother by the hair, dragging him closer. Haroon pleaded, “O son of my mother! The people overpowered me and were about to kill me. So do not ˹humiliate me and˺ make my enemies rejoice, nor count me among the wrongdoing people.”
Hazrat Musa then made this prayer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى):
رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِأَخِى وَأَدْخِلْنَا فِى رَحْمَتِكَ ۖ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
“My Lord! Forgive me and my brother! And admit us into Your mercy. You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”
Recite this Dua:
- To seek Allah’s forgiveness
- To affirm His exalted status
- To ask for protection from evil deeds and wrongdoers
4. Order to Visit Fir’aun – Surah Ta-Ha
This is possibly the most well-known Dua and incident known about Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Moreover, this Dua is mostly recited by scholars and speakers before making a speech and by students before studying for or giving their exams.
While coming back from Madyan with his family, Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) saw a fire in the distance. So, leaving his family, he went to find the source. Upon reaching it, he heard a voice say:
“O Musa, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa. And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you]. Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. Indeed, the Hour is coming – I almost conceal it – so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives. So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.”
After this affirmation and warning, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) showed Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) two miracles to further confirm His presence and strengthen Musa’s faith: he turned Hazrat Musa’s staff into a slithering snake. Then, he restored it to its normal form, and He asked Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) to draw in his hand to his side which then came out white without any disease.
Finally, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) gave this order:
“Go to Fir’aun. Indeed, he has transgressed.”
After this enlightening and humbling experience, Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) made this Dua:
رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي
“My Lord, expand for me my breast [with assurance], ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech.”
Recite this Dua:
- For success in any task (interview, test, exams, etc.)
- To seek Allah’s help and guidance
- For increasing wisdom
- To cure stammering or other speech impediments
- To ask Allah to make your tasks easier
At another place, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) ordered Hazrat Musa and his brother to visit Fir’aun:
“Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, for he has truly transgressed all bounds.”
Upon this, Hazrat Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his brother fearfully recited this Dua, after which they were reassured of Allah’s protection:
رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَآ أَوْ أَن يَطْغَىٰ
“Our Lord! We fear that he may be quick to harm us or act tyrannically.”
