What is 9-10 Muharram?

It is also referred to as Youm e Ashura (Day of Ashura). Ashura word is derived from an Arabic word meaning ten.

It is believed that many significant events took place on the Day of Ashura. It is thought that on this day, Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ saved the Jews from the oppression of Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ noticed that the Jews fast on this day, so he asked Muslims to also fast to remember the victory of Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. In Islam, Youm e Ashura is a solemn occasion due to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ during the battle of Karbala.

Islamic calendar follows the lunar dates, which means every year the dates change according to the sighting of the moon. It varies in different parts of the world with a difference of 1 to 3 days. Muslims all around the world start the Islamic year according to the sightings announced by the specific Muslim Masjid in the area. In 2025, Muharram is expected to start on June 26, 2025, which means the 9th and 10th Muharram will be on July 5, 2025, and July 6, 2025, respectively.

The lunar year is ten to twelve days shorter than the Georgian year; thus, Islamic months come at different times every year. Different Islamic communities commemorate these auspicious days according to their traditions thus, it holds a certain place in the lives of Muslims.

There are many processions held in different places in which there is mourning and also the recitation of elegies. Some people like to serve the poor by feeding them and donating to the poor who need assistance. It is also a great way to honor Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, as he was the epitome of compassion and justice.

Why is Muharram Commemorated?

The primary motive is to remember the events of Karbala in which Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ and his companions were martyred. It is considered one of the most tragic Islamic events. Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ remains steadfast against the oppression and didn’t waver from his trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. He is the epitome of bravery and righteousness. This month is a reminder to Muslims that one should remain patient in difficult times and not lose up. Always have faith in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and stand for the right thing.

What is the History and Significance of the Day of Ashura?

· The Battle of Karbala

The Battle of Karbala is the most significant event in the month of Muharram. The battle was fought in Iraq in Muharram 61 AH. The battle was fought between the grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, with his companions and an army sent by Yazid ibn Muawiyah.

The reason for this battle was that Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ did not show his loyalty towards Yazid, who was a tyrant trying to take hold of Muslim leadership. Imam رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ and his companions fought relentlessly and did not give up until the very end. Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ was martyred brutally on the 10th Muharram, the Day of Ashura. His other seventy-two companions were also martyred in this battle.

Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ was very beloved to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He used to climb onto the back of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during prayers, and He never stopped him from doing this as he loved him unconditionally. Imam Hussain is one of the most significant figures in Islamic history. His sacrifice is remembered to this day.

· The Story of Musa

It is considered that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى saved Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and Bani Israel from the oppression of Pharaoh on the Day of Ashura. Pharaoh was a tyrant during his rule. He oppressed the people and declared himself as a god. He asked everyone to follow his rules. He was very brutal and aggressive. Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ did not follow the commands of Pharaoh but asked him to worship Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى as He is the only God.

Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ started spreading the faith in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, which enraged Pharaoh. He had so much pride that he was not willing to accept that there is a higher power than him, and that is Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. On seeing that the followers of Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ were increasing, he sent a large army to tear down Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and his followers.

It is believed that it was the Day of Ashura when Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and his followers were being chased by Pharaoh and his army. Prophet Musa AS had complete faith that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى would protect them. Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ made dua to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, which is also mentioned in the Quran.

Moses said: “O my Lord, enlarge my breast, and make my mission easy.”

Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى gave him the fruit of his patience and faith. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى parted the Red Sea into two and made a way for Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and his followers to pass through it and drowned Pharaoh and his army.

· The Story of Ashura and Other Prophets

The Day of Ashura had great importance in the times of other prophets. It is believed that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى sent back the arc of Prophet Nuh عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ to the land after the floods. Prophet Nuh عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and his companions celebrated this occasion on this day.

It is also narrated that Prophet Adam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ also repented on this day as he ate the forbidden fruit in Jannah, and Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى forgave him on this day. Another significant occasion of this day is when Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى heard the dua of Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ and released him from the belly of the whale.

Ashura Fasting

It is recommended for Muslims to fast on the Day of Ashura and generally in the auspicious month of Ramadan. It is recommended to fast during Muharram, specifically on the 9th and 10th Muharram. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also inspired us on the Day of Ashura, as it serves as an auspicious day.

It is up to you which days you choose to fast, but fasting for two days is encouraged. One can fast for the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th, following the way observed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is a day of immense blessings and forgiveness. Some may fast for all three days. It is not obligatory but a Sunnah.

Commemorating the Day of Ashura

Other than fasting, one can give Sadqa or Zakat to the needy. It is also encouraged to worship Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى more as it’s a day on which Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى bestows more blessings. Reading the Quran, offering Nafl prayers, and sending Darood on Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is also encouraged. It is a time when one can learn from the lessons of Ashura and apply them in our daily routine. The biggest lesson we can seek from Ashura is that no matter what, do not lose hope and keep your faith strong towards Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى.

· Ziyarat Ashura and Other Duas

Shia Muslim community conducts special Majlis in the remembrance of Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ in which they listen to the entire occasion of Karbala and show their immense sorrow. They perform salutatory prayers to Imam Hussain رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ and his companions.

Virtues of Muharram

Muharram is referred to as the second holiest month after Ramadan.

• Month of Peace: War is forbidden in this month as it is a month of peace.
• Time of Repentance: It is a great time to represent for your sins and start fresh as it is a first month of the Islamic year.
• Reminder of Patience and Faith: Karbala gives us a lesson to stay patient and keep your faith strong.

Cultural Variations in Observance

There are some cultural variations observed all over the world. Shia and Sunni Muslims also have some traditional variations on the commemoration of Ashura. Shia Muslims play Taziyah, and some also perform the act of chain beating. While Sunni Muslims prefer fasting and praying rather than going to processions. There are some differences, but the main essence of this month remains the same for all Muslims.

Misconceptions Around the Day of Ashura

There are some misconceptions regarding the Day of Ashura. Some of them are given as follows:

• Prophet Adam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was created on the Day of Ashura.
• Prophet Ibrahim عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is said to have been born on Youm e Ashura.
• Some say that the Day of Judgement will take place on the 10th of Muharram on Friday.
• It is also said that one who takes a bath on this day will never get ill.
• Some believe that if you put Kajal on this day, you will never have any eye disease.
