Prayer (Salah, الصلاة) is one of the obligatory acts of worship in Islam. It is the most prominent worship that characterizes Muslims from others. It is compulsory for all Muslims, men and women. While women are allowed to perform Salah, individually at home, men are required to offer it in congregation, in Mosques, behind the Imam (the leader of the prayer). However, they can also perform it individually, under compelling circumstances.

One of the basic components of Salah is to recite Surah Al-Fatiha and any other Surah or verses from the Quran, whether it is fard, sunnah, or nafl prayer. Since Surah Al-Fatiha has to be recited compulsorily in every Rakah of every prayer, most Muslims have memorized it, and they can recite it without any difficulty. But often, it becomes somewhat difficult for a person to memorize other Surahs or verses of the Quran for recitation in the Salah. Resultantly, there is every possibility that while reciting them in prayer, one may make a mistake or completely forget a particular part of the verses or Surahs. Here, the most relevant and frequently asked question arises: Do I have to repeat the prayer if I forgot a verse?

Keep reading this blog to find out the correct answer to this very important question.

Repeating the Prayer If a Verse Forgotten

The answer to this critical question is dependent on various factors, such as:

  • Whether it happened while offering prayer individually or behind the Imam?
  • Whether you forgot a verse of Surah Al-Fatiha or any other Surah, which is recited after it?
  • Whether a complete verse of a Surah was forgotten, or a part of it?
  • Did you make a mistake in reciting a word or completely forget a verse?

Apart from the above, there might be some other situations relevant to this important issue. The solution to each situation may differ on a case-by-case basis. To better understand this issue, let us learn the basics of the recitation of Quranic verses in prayer.

Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha In Prayer

Surah Al-Fatiha (ٱلْفَاتِحَة), the opening Surah of the Quran, is one of the obligatory requirements of every prayer. In fact, no prayer is valid without reciting it, as clearly mentioned in Hadith 756 of Sahih Al-Bukhari.

Translation

Whoever does not recite Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid.

Accordingly, this Surah has to be recited in every Rakah (unit) of every prayer, whether it is a Fard (Compulsory) or an Optional (Sunnah and Nafl) prayer. Similarly, recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha is also considered obligatory for everyone, even if offering prayer in congregation behind the Imam.

However, there are two different opinions among scholars on this issue. Some are of the opinion that although the Imam recites Surah Al-Fatiha, the follower (Muqtadi) must also recite it, in light of the referred Hadith. On the other hand, some other scholars opine that when offering prayer behind the Imam, the followers are not required to recite it. Their opinion is based on the 204th verse of Surah Al-Aa’raf.

Translation

When the Qur’an is recited, listen to it in silence. You may perhaps be blessed.

In short, recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha in every rak’ah of every prayer is compulsory, whether recited individually or behind the Imam. Hence, any lapse, mistake, or forgetfulness in reciting Surah Al-Fatiha compulsorily invalidates the prayer, and one has to repeat it.

If the mistake or forgetfulness of reciting any verse from Surah Al-Fatiha is realized during the prayer, you must correct the error instantly to complete the prayer. However, if the mistake was realized after completion of the prayer, you must repeat the prayer during which this mistake was made.

Bottomline

Whatever the situation may be, if someone forgets to recite one or more verses of Surah Al-Fatiha, his/her prayer becomes invalid and needs to be repeated.

Recitation of Other Verses Or Surahs In Prayer After Surah Al-Fatiha

As a part of following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, Muslims across the Islamic world traditionally recite one or more short Surahs or a few verses from a longer Surah during the first two Rakahs of Prayer, after reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, though doing so is not obligatory. Not being an obligation, entirely changes the scenario of forgetting a verse at this stage of the prayer.

Though not obligatory, reciting some verses or a complete short Surah after Surah Al-Fatiha is considered highly virtuous. According to the majority of scholars, at least one long verse from any Surah of the Quran, which carries complete meanings or rulings, is sufficient for recitation in prayer after Surah Al-Fatiha. For example, ayat al-Kursi, the 255th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah, or the 282nd verse of Surah Al-Baqarah, can be recited at this stage of the prayer, as these convey a complete meaning.

On the other hand, one can recite at least three short but consecutive verses from any Surah of the Quran, after Surah Al-Fatiha. The third option in this context is to recite a complete short Surah, such as the last 10 Surahs of the 30th Juzz (Para).

Since recitation of such verses is not compulsory, any mistake or forgetfulness in their recitation does not invalidate the Prayer; hence, repeating that prayer is not required; instead, you may stop recitation and immediately move to the next part of the prayer, i.e., Ruku (Bow). Alternatively, you can try to restart the recitation of that particular surah or verse, if you can recall it. Another option is that you can skip that verse and move on to the next verse, if you can recall that.  Otherwise, the prayer should be continued without completing it.

Bottomline

  • Recitation of additional Quranic verses or Surahs after Surah Al-Fatiha is not compulsory, but rather is a Sunnah. So, any mistake or forgetfulness in doing so does not invalidate prayer.
  • You don’t need to repeat the prayer if you forget a verse at this stage of the prayer. Instead, you should try to remember the correct verse or stop recitation and go into the state of Ruku to complete the prayer.
  • You can also skip the forgotten verse and continue reciting the next verse, if you remember that.

Misconception – A common misconception in this context is that one has to perform Sujood As-Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) if he/she forgets a verse during prayer after Surah Al-Fatiha. There is no such requirement as per the consensus of the Scholars.

How to Avoid This Situation?

  • Be attentive and focus entirely on your prayer.
  • A better option is to decide what Surah or verses you would like to recite after Surah Al-Fatiha. This will help a lot to avoid forgetfulness.
  • Never try to recite the verses that you have not comprehensively memorized.
  • The 30th Juzz (para) contains many short Surahs; just memorize them, as it is quite easy. Recitation of these Surahs in your prayer would be extremely easy and beneficial, whereas you may also avoid any mistake or forgetfulness in your prayer.

Conclusion

Islam is a practical religion, and it does not impose such things that are beyond one’s capabilities, as mentioned in the 286th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah. (God does not burden a soul beyond capacity). The same principle applies in the performance of prayer (Salah). Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha is made compulsory for every Rakah of every prayer, whereas recitation of additional Surahs or verses after it is not compulsory, as it might not be easy for everyone to memorize so many verses.

Similarly, if one forgets a verse during prayer, after Surah Al-Fatiha, his/her prayer will still be valid and does not need to be repeated. However, if one forgets a verse out of Surah Al-Fatiha, they must repeat their prayer. Hence, it is highly advisable to memorize short Surahs from the 30th Juzz of the Quran so they can be recited easily during the prayer after Surah Al-Fatiha.
