Hasbiyallahu (حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ) is a phrase, derived from different verses of the Quran, which translates to “Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is sufficient for me”. In some verses its plural form is also mentioned as Hasbunallahu (حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ), “Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is sufficient for us”. It is a powerful dua as well as an unconditional declaration of faith, reliance, and trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, submitting that “I/we seek help and mercy only from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى”.
This is the shortest form of this declaration and dua, whereas in different verses of the Quran, its detailed version is also available, such as “hasbuna Allahu wani Ama alwakeelu” (حَسْبُنَا اللہُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيْلُ), (God is sufficient for us, and the best of protectors) and “Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa, ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa Huwa Rabbul-‘Arshil-‘Azim” (حَسْبِيَ ٱللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ), (“God is sufficient for me. There is no God but He; I depend on Him alone, the Lord of the glorious Throne.”).
In short, Hasbiyallahu or Hasbunallahu, whether recited in short form or in detailed versions, is a powerful dua as well as a declaration of complete dependence on Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. It is also a statement of unconditional faith in the Oneness of Allah (Tauheed) and Trust and reliance on Allah (Tawakkal). When a person recites this dua, he/she completely submits to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى; hence gets relieved from worries, fear, and doubts. Like any other supplication, it can be recited so often, so as to strengthen one’s relationship with Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, as he/she finds peace in His decree, and overcomes challenges of life with Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى support.
Historical Context of Hasbiyallahu
The phrase Hasbiyallahu takes its origin, historically, from the Quranic verses 172 to 174 of Surah Al-e-Imran. These verses were revealed when the Muslims had to face a setback in the Battle of Uhud (Ghazwa-e-Uhud). It was a difficult time for the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ and his followers (Sahabah). At this critical time, the hypocrites tried to scare them by spreading rumors about the gathering of a huge army by the Meccans to launch an attack on the Muslims of Medina. They spread the news of gathering such a huge army that would be hard to defeat. The purpose was to discourage and dishearten the Prophet and his sahabah.
Contrary to the expectations of the hypocrites, the Prophet and his followers expressed full and unconditional faith and trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. This event is narrated in verses 172 to 174 of Surah Al-e-Imran.
Translation
- Those who obeyed the call of God and His Messenger, even after they were wounded, and took heed for themselves, shall indeed have an ample reward.
- Those who were told: “They have gathered an army, beware,” and their faith increased and they said: “God is sufficient for us, and the best of protectors,”
- And returned with God’s favour and grace without harm, for they attended the pleasure of God; and great is the benevolence of God.
Here, the phrase حَسْبُنَا اللہُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيْلُ (Hasbunallahu wanaimal wakeel) is used to express complete submission, faith and reliance on Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى.
The same subject matter is also narrated in Hadith 4563 of Sahih Al-Bukhari, with reference to the event of throwing Hazrat Ibrahim in fire by the disbelievers. Hazrat Ibrahim also recited the same phrase Hasbiyallahu wanimal Wakeel.
Translation
‘Allah is Sufficient for us and He Is the Best Disposer of affairs,” was said by Abraham when he was thrown into the fire; and it was said by Muhammad when they (i.e. hypocrites) said, “A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them,” but it only increased their faith and they said: “Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs, for us).”
