Life patterns keep changing across generations, not merely because of advancements in technology but also because of changing needs. They also change with shifts in interpersonal relations, emotions, love, hatred, and so on. But sometimes, the personal conduct of an individual might not be the same as that of the majority of the civilization. Such people’s behavior has a long-lasting impact on the overall pattern of civilizations. Through various phases of evolution, lifestyles have shifted to the modern world, which is entirely different from what they were thousands of years ago. But the lives of some people who lived in ancient times still inspire us in many ways. The Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is one of those icons who left many lessons for generations to come.

The life of the Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is a story of innocence, patience, and forgiveness, despite the serious family conflicts, betrayal, and jealousy he faced early in life. In the middle part of his life, he faced temptation, injustice, and even imprisonment, but he came out of these difficulties successfully, showing patience and forgiveness. The life story of the Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is narrated in the Quran, naming it as the best of stories.  The 3rd verse of Surah Yusuf mentions it as follows:

Translation – (O Muhammad), by revealing the Qur’an to you, We narrate to you in the best manner the stories of the past, although before this narration you were utterly unaware of them.

The Life of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ At A Glance

Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was referred to as the most honorable among men by the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, as mentioned in Hadith 3374 of Sahih Al-Bukhari.

Translation of the relevant part – Some people asked the Prophet: “Who is the most honorable amongst the people?” He replied, “The most honorable among them is the one who is the most Allah-fearing.” They said, “O Allah’s Prophet! We do not ask about this.” He said, “Then the most honorable person is Joseph, Allah’s Prophet, the son of Allah’s Prophet, the son of Allah’s Prophet, the son of Allah’s Khalil.”……..

  • He was one of the 12 sons of the Prophet Yaqub عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ
  • He had 10 half-brothers and one full brother, who was younger than him.
  • He was younger than all his half-brothers.
  • He had a dream that eleven stars, the sun, and the moon all bowed before him.
  • When he told his father about this dream, the Prophet Yaqub عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُasked him not to say anything about it to his elder brothers
  • Overpowered by jealousy, his elder brothers took him along with them for a leisure trip and threw him into a well to get rid of him.
  • He was rescued from the well by a passing caravan and was sold into slavery in Egypt.
  • One of the high officials of Egypt bought him as a slave and took him to his palace.
  • The wife of that high official was deeply impressed by his handsomeness and tried to seduce him, but the Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُrefused to commit such a sinful act. To take revenge, she accused him of sexual assault on her, which she failed to prove because the shirt of the Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was torn from the back, not from the front.
  • Despite being proven innocent, he was put into imprisonment, where he lived for several years.
  • With the Blessings of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, he learned the art of interpreting dreams, which ultimately took him to the King of Egypt, who had a confusing dream.

  • Finally, he revealed his identity to his half-brothers and forgave them for their injustice and jealousy. Ultimately, he also met his father, who by then had lost his eyesight but recognized him with the Blessings of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ

Lessons from the Life of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ for Modern Life

The life of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ has left many lessons that remain relevant today, despite the lapse of thousands of years. Some of these lessons are summarized here:

1. Do Not Share Your Dreams with Others

The life story of the Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, as mentioned in the Quran, begins with a dream he once had in which eleven stars, the sun, and the moon bowed before him. When he told his father about this dream, his father, Hazrat Yaqub, asked him not to share it with anyone, especially his half-brothers. The 4th and 5th verses of Surah Yusuf narrate it as follows:

Translation

  1. Call to mind when Joseph said to his father: “My father! I saw (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them prostrating themselves before me.”
  2. His father said: “My son! Do not relate your dream to your brothers lest they hatch a plot to harm you. Indeed, Satan is man’s open enemy.

So, the lesson from the life of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is not to share dreams with others, as many of them might not be your well-wishers, whereas some others might be even your enemies. Sharing dreams is therefore not a good practice, as learned from the life story of the Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ.

2. Always Be Patient Whatever the Situation

Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ practiced patience with grace during the most difficult times of his life, when he faced brutal and jealous acts by his half-brothers in his childhood. They threw him into a deep well out of jealousy. He was rescued and sold into slavery. He spent quite a considerable time in imprisonment after being accused of sexual assault, though he was not proven guilty. During this entire period, right from his childhood till being sent into imprisonment, he remained a model of patience (Sabr), with firm belief and trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.

Another example of patience was exhibited by his father, Prophet Yaqub عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, who suffered the loss of his most beloved son but remained calm and patient, while remaining committed to his trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. The exemplary patience of Prophet Yaqub is mentioned in the 18th verse of Surah Yusuf.

Translation of relevant part – …… So I will bear this patiently, and in good grace……

Modern life is full of difficulties, such as unemployment, financial problems, family conflicts, disappointment, illness, emotional betrayal, and many more. The life of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ teaches us that difficult conditions are part of life and will end at an appropriate time, with the blessings of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. So, we should pass through worldly difficulties with patience and grace.

3. Have Unwavering Trust in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Plan

Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ suffered a lot during his early life but never lost hope, although circumstances apparently appeared miserable. He was sold into slavery when he was young, after being rescued from a deep well, where he was thrown by his brothers. Instead of losing hope, he remained steadfast in his belief in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ had His Own plans for him, which ultimately raised him in the household of a higher and influential official of the Kingdom of Egypt. The 21st verse of Surah Yusuf mentions it as follows:

Translation – The man from Egypt who bought him said to his wife: “Take good care of him, possibly he might be of benefit to us, or we might adopt him as a son.” Thus We found a way for Joseph to become established in that land, and in order that We might teach him to comprehend the deeper meaning of things. Allah has full power to implement His design, although most people do not know that.

Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ not only made him part of the family of an influential person in Egypt but also blessed him with the ability to interpret dreams. This exclusive ability later on paved the way for his successful future in the Kingdom. So, the lesson from his life is to keep firm belief in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ plans, whatever the circumstances. Never lose hope.

4. Avoid Envy and Jealousy

Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was the most beloved son of his father. He had one real brother, who was younger than him, whereas his 10 half-brothers were older than him. His half-brothers somehow started feeling jealous because they thought that their father loved Yusuf more than them. Gradually, the jealousy turned into a grudge, and they decided to kill Yusuf. Ultimately, they threw him into a deep well. Jealousy resulted in a terrible criminal act.

The lesson learned from this part of the life story of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is that jealousy and envy can destroy relationships, even the closest relationships. It leads to serious criminal actions. We can observe such crimes in modern life as well, where jealousy turns into greed, resulting in serious crimes. So, the story of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ teaches us to avoid jealousy and envy.

5. Maintain Morality When Facing Temptation

The biggest turning point in the life story of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ was when he faced temptation. He was a handsome young man and was facing the most vulnerable situation of his life, but he chose to maintain his moral values and immediately turned towards Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, seeking protection against temptation. The incident is mentioned in the 33rd verse of Surah Yusuf.

Translation – Joseph said: “My Lord! I prefer imprisonment to what they ask me to do. And if You do not avert from me the guile of these women, I will succumb to their attraction and lapse into ignorance.”

In modern life, people often face temptations, but only a few come out of it with grace. The life of Prophet Yusuf teaches us that to live a successful modern life in line with Islamic values, we must maintain morality and avoid temptation.

6. Maintain Your Character Despite Injustice

The life of Prophet Yusuf is full of injustice against him. First, his half-brothers betrayed him when he was just a kid. Then he was sold into slavery. Later on, he faced false accusations when he denied temptation. He was put into prison, despite the fact that he was not guilty. A normal person, especially in that era, would have become cruel and criminal, but Prophet Yusuf faced all injustice with dignity and did not retaliate in a wrong way. Instead of allowing pain to make him worse, he allowed his experiences to make him wiser.

It teaches us to maintain dignity in situations where others commit injustice. Instead of retaliating in a wrong way, we should turn towards Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, seeking his mercy and blessing.

7. Use Your Skills for the Benefit of Humankind

Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ gained experience and skills during the toughest phase of his life, even when in prison. He was also blessed with extraordinary knowledge and skills by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. After his release from prison, he could have easily chosen to live a happy life with his family, but he chose a different path. He asked the King to appoint him as the controller of the kingdom’s storehouses because he knew he had the skill and knowledge to manage the food supply during the drought season. This means he chose to use his expertise for the benefit of humankind, because the kingdom was on the verge of a severe drought. His choice and action are mentioned in the 55th verse of Surah Yusuf.

Translation – Joseph said: “Place me in charge of the treasures of the land. I am a good keeper and know my task well.”

It teaches us that everyone should use their skills and knowledge for the benefit of others, instead of using them only for their own advantage.

8. Learn to Forgive Instead of Taking Revenge

Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ faced the highest level of betrayal at the hands of his own brothers when he was a young boy. In fact, it not only put his life at risk but also separated him from his beloved father. It altogether changed the course of his life. When his difficult times ended and he was elevated to an influential status, he came across the same brothers who had almost killed him. It was the time when he would have taken revenge, but he preferred forgiveness. He forgave them with grace, as mentioned in the 91st and 92nd verses of Surah Yusuf.

Translation

  1.  They said: “We swear by Allah! Indeed, Allah has chosen you in preference to us, and we were truly guilty.”
  2.  He replied: “No blame lies with you today. May Allah forgive you. He is the Most Merciful of all those that are merciful.

The lesson is “forgiveness is greater than revenge”. We should try to implement this principle in our lives.

9. Do Not Lose Hope in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Mercy

The life of Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ tells us that one should never lose hope in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ mercy. He was separated from his father when he was just a little boy, but kept his hope alive and was ultimately reunited with his father after so many years. During this entire period, he maintained complete trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.

In modern life, people often lose hope, and they should learn from the life of Prophet Yusuf سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.

10. Do Not Allow Your Past to Write Your Future

Prophet Yusuf عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ (AS) began his journey in a well but eventually rose to the status of a respected leader. His early suffering did not impact his future. This is a very important lesson; we need to learn it in the modern world. Do not let your past decide your final destiny.
