Several revelations in the Hadith and the Quran have great significance. However, the Ayatul Kursi is one of the most significant verses, and this is quoted by the Prophet (ﷺ) Himself. We as children are made to memorize this verse, and there may not be a single Muslim who does not know it by heart.
The question that comes to mind is, why is this verse so important? If you look at its translation, you will find praises and names of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). But isn’t that what every other verse in the Quran mentions?
Here in this article, we will discuss the relevance of Ayat al-Kursi in our everyday lives, how it is essential, and what its benefits are.
Ayatul Kursi in English
“Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He fully knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills to reveal. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.”
Whoever reads this when he lies down to sleep will have a guardian from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) remain with him, and Satan will not be able to come near him until he rises in the morning.
Historical Context (Shan e Nazool) of Ayatul Kursi?
Ayatul Kursi is the 255th verse of the Quran. It was revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ) during the nighttime and then was penned down by Zayd. It can be found in Surah Al Baqarah.
Significance of Ayatul Kursi
Ayatul Kursi holds great significance in Islamic teachings. It is one of the most critical verses as it contains several names of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and is a cure for bodies and souls. The word Kursi translates to ‘Throne or Chair’. In the word itself, you can figure out that it is one of the four parts of Allah’s (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) Throne.
The significance of Ayat al-Kursi can be verified by the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) Himself. According to Abu Hurairah, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) made Ayatul Kursi the pinnacle of Islam.
“For everything, there is a hump (pinnacle), and the hump (pinnacle) of the Qur’an is Surat Al-Baqarah, in it there is an Ayah which is the master of the Ayat in the Qur’an; [it is] Ayat Al-Kursi.”
Benefits of Reciting Ayatul Kursi
Every word of the Quran is beautifully crafted, and various supplications exist for every purpose in the Sunnah. It is a guidebook that helps believers live a particular aspect of their lives. But, the one thing that separates Ayatul Kursi from the rest of the Surah is that Satan himself recommended it from protection against evil.
Here are a few benefits of reciting Ayatul Kursi in Sunnah’s light;
1. To Enter Paradise
According to Allah’s (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) Messenger
“Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi at the end of every obligatory prayer, nothing but death will prevent him from entering Paradise.”
All you have to do is recite Ayatul Kursi after every salah to get a place in paradise. Would you want to miss such an essential offer by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) himself? There are several ways to enter heaven, but this is one of the best ways.
2. To Protect Yourself
As recited by Abu Huraira (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْه), Messenger of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) said,
“Whoever recites Ha Mim Al-Mu’min – up to – To Him is the return (40:1-3), and Ayat Al-Kursi, when he reaches (gets up in) the morning, he will be protected by them until the evening. And whoever recites them when he reaches the evening, he will be protected by them until the morning.”
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ordered me to guard the Zakat revenue of Ramadan. Then somebody came to me and started stealing from the foodstuff. I caught him and said, “I will take you to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)!” Then Abu Huraira described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), “(Please don’t take me to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you.) When you go to your bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi, (2.255) for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn.” (When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard the story) he said (to me), “He (who came to you at night) told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Satan.”
Think of this as a 24-hour security service protection in the morning and evening. It is one of the best ways to trust and have complete faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), who protects you as no one else does. Moreover, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also mentions that whoever recites Ayatul Kursi in his home will be free from shaytan. Some may even believe those who recite Ayatul Kursi when leaving home will be protected from evil.
3. To Keep Evil Eyes Away
The evil eye is real and has been mentioned in the Quran several times. Several communities have superstitious beliefs about this. However, as Muslims, we know that Only Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) can protect us from all kinds of evil. One such case was narrated by Abdur Rahman Abi Laila (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْه) in Sunan Ibn Majah: 3549. According to him, A bedouin came to the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) and told him that his brother suffered from Mental derangement.
The Prophet (ﷺ) called his brother. Ayatul Kursi was one of the verses that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) recited. It helped cure the man, and he was no longer mentally deranged. Some might even link this verse to the cure for depression and anxiety.
