Among the most important Islamic teachings, Sabr (صبر) holds great significance. The Arabic word Sabr is often translated to “patience,” but under Islamic beliefs, it covers several practical human behaviors as well, such as endurance, steadfastness, and self-restraint.

Practicing Sabr is mentioned in the Quran as one of the best practices a Muslim should adopt in his life. The Quran has repeatedly narrated that those who practice Sabr in their lives hold special status and are highly rewarded by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, in this world as well as on the Day of Judgment. It is also one of the most emphasized teachings by the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ. He practically exhibited Sabr in his life, which was then followed by his companions, and is still practiced by a vast majority of Muslims across the World.

Sabr is the ability of a believer (Muslim) to remain committed to faith, maintain complete obedience and submission to the Will of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, while being hopeful in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ mercy, whatever the circumstances of his life. It is an act of remaining resolute during the times of hardship. It is also a matter of resisting worldly temptations, without compromising one’s faith. Sabr is also an act of being consistent in worship even during the hardest and toughest times in one’s life. It is one of the most important elements of spiritual strength.

In this article, we will explore the meanings of Sabr, its spiritual value in Islam, and how Muslims can practice it in their daily lives.

Islamic Concept of Patience (Sabr)

Sabr in Islam is quite an elaborate term, which includes patience, steadfastness, endurance, perseverance, and self-restraint. It also includes resistance against temptations, which are often against the set parameters of Islam, such as earning wealth through unfair means, indulgence in sinful activities, eating or drinking foodstuff declared impermissible in Islam, and many others. This worldly life is full of temptations and hardships, which sometimes come our way in the shape of financial constraints, illnesses, family affairs, loss of lives, and so on. The concept of Sabr in Islam is to resist temptations and remain persistent in worship despite all odds.

In Islamic terminology, the characteristics of Sabr can be summarized as follows:

  • Unwavering trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ(Tawakkul)
  • Self-discipline
  • Gratitude
  • Obedience and Submission
  • Hope for the best
  • Seeking mercy of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ

Firm belief that hardship and trials are part of life, which come our way from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, just to test us.

Islam emphasizes steadfastness in faith, unwavering trust in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, and persistence in worship, regardless of circumstances. The Quran, in some 90 verses, describes the virtues of Sabr, some of which are as follows:

1. Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ  is With the Patient

The 153rd verse of Surah Al-Baqarah describes that Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ help comes for those who observe patience.

Translation – O Believers, seek help with fortitude and Salat, for Allah is with those who show fortitude.

It means that Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ helps those who remain steadfast in faith and maintain prayer (Salah) during the testing times.

2. Patience Brings Countless Rewards

Every good deed has its own specific rewards, whereas the rewards for patience have been described as “beyond measure” in the Quran. The 10th verse of Surah Az-Zumar mentions it as follows:

Translation of relevant part – ……. Verily, those who persevere shall be granted their reward beyond all reckoning.

3. Believers Do Observe Patience During Hardships

Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ tests His servants with hardships, and for those who observe patience during such testing times, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ promises glad tidings for those who remain steadfast during hardships, as narrated in the 155th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah.

Translation – We will surely put you to trial by involving you in fear and hunger and by causing loss of property, life and earnings. And give good tidings to those who remain steadfast in these trials.

4. The Qualities of A Patient Believer

Continuing with the same subject, as quoted above, the Quran describes the qualities of a patient believer in the 156th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah.

Translation – when a misfortune comes to them, they say, “We are Allah’s, and we shall certainly return to Him,”

This verse narrates that when a believer is tested by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, he readily declares that we belong to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, implying that hardships come from Him, and that we will have to go back to Him. This is the best behavioral response by a Muslim while going through tough times.

5. Patience Brings Success in Life and Hereafter

Another virtue of Sabr is mentioned in the 200th verse of Surah Al-e-Imran as follows:

Translation – Believers, be steadfast, and vie in steadfastness, stand firm in your faith, and hold Allah in fear that you may attain true success.

Those who remain steadfast in faith are guaranteed true success through this verse. And scholars describe that true success of a believer includes success in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. Success in worldly life is not material success in this world, though it may also sometimes be included in it; the success in this world is that a believer remains firm in faith throughout his worldly life.

The Prophet’s صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ Emphasis on Sabr (Patience)

The Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ also encourages patience (Sabr). He himself suffered a lot and continuously passed through a series of hardships, especially during his life in Mecca. Despite these immensely difficult times, which involved physical, financial, and emotional setbacks, the Prophet exhibited extreme Sabr (patience), which set an example for Muslims.

The practical teachings of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, as mentioned in several authentic Hadiths, emphasize the importance and need to observe patience during difficult times.

Hadith 1469 of Sahih Al-Bukhari narrates that patience is much better than any other blessing for Muslims. This Hadith narrates an incident when someone from the Ansar (locals of Medina) asked for some help from the Prophet, which the Prophet gave him but advised him to abstain from asking for help from others. Instead of asking for help, one should ask for self-sufficiency from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, while observing patience.

Translation – Some Ansari persons asked for (something) from Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) and he gave them. They again asked him for (something), and he again gave them. And then they asked him and he gave them again till all that was with him finished. And then he said “If I had anything. I would not keep it away from you. (Remember) Whoever abstains from asking others, Allah will make him contented, and whoever tries to make himself self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience.”

The message of this Hadith is quite clear; observe patience instead of asking for help from others during financial constraints.

In another Hadith, the Prophet taught his companions that true patience needs to be demonstrated at the onset of a hardship. Hadith 1283 of Sahih Al-Bukhari mentions it as follows:

Translation of relevant part – ……. Verily, patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.

It means that when a hardship hits, one has to exhibit patience (Sabr) right from the start of that difficulty, till the end, while observing steadfastness and firm belief in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ

The Prophet said that every hardship removes sins, implying that test and trial are a source of purification if we pass through them with Sabr. Hadith 5641 of Sahih Al-Bukhari mentions it as follows:

Translation – No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.

So, the Sunnah of the Prophet teaches us some of the most important aspects of Sabr, as summarized here:

  • Patience or Sabr, demonstrated by a Muslim, is a sort of blessing from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, and that patience is better than any other blessing.
  • When a calamity (hardship) occurs, Muslims are required to demonstrate patience at the onset of that difficulty, and should maintain it till the hardship ends.
  • Hardships come from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰas a test and trial. When a believer faces it with patience, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ expiates some of his sins as a reward for facing hardship with firm belief in Him.

Types of Sabr in Islam

Islamic teachings specify three different types of Sabr, which every Muslim must observe throughout their lives.

1. Sabr in Hardship

The most common type of patience or Sabr is the behavior of a Muslim, which he exhibits while facing a difficult time. The hardship might be physical, financial, and emotional. It may be in the form of a financial constraint, illness, loss of some beloved ones, and so on. In the modern era, workplace challenges also come under the category of hardship. Family affairs and personal miseries or disappointments are also very common hardships of modern lifestyle.

Islam teaches us to face such tough times with patience and endurance.

2. Sabr or Patience in Obedience of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ

This type of patience comes under the category of spiritual patience. A believer must practice patience to maintain consistency in worship. It is not a one-time exercise; it spans through our worldly lives. Consistency in acts of worship can be made possible only with patience, especially in the current busy life pattern. The basic thing here is developing a sense of obedience to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, which in turn brings patience in regular performance of worship.

The acts of worship, where consistency matters, include:

  • The performance of the five regular daily prayers
  • Month-long fasting during Ramadan
  • Giving charity (Zakat)
  • Regular recitation of the Quran, while understanding its meanings and theme
  • Seeking Islamic knowledge

Consistency often requires discipline, endurance, and perseverance.

3. Sabr (Patience) in Avoiding Sinful Activities

Another most relevant type of Sabr or patience, in present-day life, is avoiding involvement in sinful activities. The modern world is full of temptations, which require utmost patience to maintain righteousness.

Some of the acts that help build resistance to avoid sins, as taught by Islam, are:

  • Lowering the gaze
  • Avoiding gossip
  • Avoiding interest (riba)
  • Controlling anger
  • Speaking truthfully
  • Avoiding dishonesty
  • Maintaining righteousness while dealing with others

Patience is a skill that can be developed with conscious effort.

How Can We Practice Sabr Daily?

Here are some of the practical ways to exercise Sabr daily, especially in the modern life pattern:

  • Consistency in Prayers– Regular daily prayer is the best source of building connection with Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. It helps to bring calmness in the heart, which develops patience. The Quran encourages believers to seek help through patience and prayer (The 153rd verse of Surah Al-Baqarah).
  • Daily Recitation of the Quran – Recitation of the Quran brings peace of heart and soul. Regular recitation, with understanding the meanings, provides comfort and guidance during the testing times.
  • Remember the Trials are Temporary – It is a universal principle, and is also supported by the Quranic verses (5thand 6th verse of Surah Al-Inshirah) that the trials and tests are always temporary and are often followed by comfort and ease. So, maintain firm belief in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ that He will bring an end to the hardships.
  • Supplicate Frequently – Islam teaches us to make Dua on every important occasion, especially during stress and anxiety, and to come out of difficult times. Many such supplications are mentioned in the Quran and Hadith. Make it a habit to recite Duas frequently to build a sense of patience.
  • Avoid Anger – If one can control his anger, it is a clear sign that he is observing patience. It is also emphasized in the Sunnah of the Prophet that a believer must have control over anger. Practice it regularly by pausing before reacting. Remembering Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰat this crucial time helps avoid anger.
  • Exercise Gratitude – Maintain gratitude by recognizing and remembering Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰblessings; it brings peace of heart and mind and helps a lot to come out of difficulties.
  • Keep the Company of Righteous People – Spend maximum time in the company of righteous people. It may be some of your close friends or family companions. It is a rich source of inculcating patience in your heart and soul.

Firm Belief and Trust in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Wisdom – Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ is All-Knowing, and All-Wise. What is best for us and what is not is only known to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. Sometimes we may feel that something is good for us, but it does not happen. This is the time to have complete trust in Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Wisdom. If that thing is not coming our way, it means it was not good for us, which we cannot comprehend right now, but Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ knows what is good for us and, more importantly, when it should happen. This concept is mentioned in the 216th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah (You have been enjoined to go to war, and you dislike it; it may be that you dislike a thing and the same is good for you, and you love a thing and the same is bad for you: Allah knows but you do not)
