Surah Fatiha is one of the highly virtuous Surahs of the Quran. It is the first Surah and is often referred to as a “preface to the Quran”. The significance of this Surah can also be understood by the fact that it is an essential part of each unit (Rakah) of every prayer (Salah). It comprises seven verses, which are a sort of supplication to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. The theme of these verses is praise and worship of Allah, سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, while it ends with a direct supplication (Dua).

As a strong Islamic practice and tradition, many Muslims say “Ameen” after reciting Surah Fatiha. They also say Ameen when they are simply listening to someone else recite this Surah. This practice is more common among some Muslims during regular daily prayers, especially when this Surah is recited by the Imam (leader of prayer) in a loud voice, such as during the Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha prayers. At the same time, a vast majority of Muslims do not follow this practice; they do not say Ameen loudly, especially during the prayers.

In this article, we will explore why some people say Ameen loudly after Surah Fatiha, while many others do not.

Meaning of the Phrase “Ameen”

Before exploring why some Muslims say Ameen after reciting or listening to Surah Fatiha, it is important to understand what this phrase means. Ameen.

Ameen (آمِينَ) is an Arabic word that translates to “O Allah, accept!” It is also translated as “O Allah Answer our Prayer!” In both these meanings, the word Ameen refers to the complete submission to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, with sincere and deep-hearted hope that He will listen to and bless us with His mercy, while accepting our supplication (Dua). It is a routine and very common practice across all segments of Muslims to say Ameen while supplicating. Another common practice is that whenever someone makes Dua, the others (listening to them) say Ameen. It is a firm belief among Muslims that reciting this specific phrase brings more chances of acceptance of supplication.

Saying Ameen Loudly After Surah Fatiha

Surah Fatiha is a short Surah with only 7 verses. The theme and subject of this Surah is praising Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and reaffirming that He is the Only One worthy of worship. The last part of this Surah is in the form of a supplication, seeking guidance from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى to follow the right path.

Saying Ameen after the recitation of this Surah is a strong tradition among Muslims, based on the following two reasons:

· It is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ

The main reason for saying Ameen after reciting Surah Fatiha is that it is a Sunnah of the Prophet, as he did so during prayer. There are quite a few authentic Hadith references that narrate this practice and advice of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ. Hadith 4475 of Sahih Al-Bukhari narrates it as follows:

Translation

When the Imam says: ‘Ghair-il-Maghdubi `alaihim Walad-Dallin (i.e. not the path of those who earn Your Anger, nor the path of those who went astray (1.7)), then you must say, ‘Ameen’, for if one’s utterance of ‘Ameen’ coincides with that of the angels, then his past sins will be forgiven.

The above Hadith clearly points to the Prophet’s specific instruction to say Ameen when the Imam says this phrase after reciting the last verse of Surah Fatiha. It also specifically refers to following this practice during the regular prayers, implying that this should be done during those prayers during which the Imam recites Surah Fatiha in a loud voice. Moreover, it clarifies that the Imam would say this loudly, so that the followers can listen and join him in saying Ameen loudly.

· It is A Routine Practice Among Muslims to Say Ameen After Making Supplication

Surah Fatiha is widely recognized as a powerful supplication (Dua), where the reciter seeks guidance from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى to follow the righteous path, the path of those who are blessed by Him. Since it is a common practice in the Muslim community to say Ameen after making a Dua (supplication), it is believed that doing so increases the likelihood of acceptance of the request. In the same spiritual context, many Muslims say Ameen when reciting or listening to Surah Fatiha, especially during prayers. They say it loudly, following the clear instructions of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, as mentioned in many Hadiths, including the Hadith as quoted above.

The Reason Why Ameen Is Recited In A Loud Voice By Many People

There are many strong traditions, quoted by many scholars, that the Prophet expressly commanded his followers to say Ameen by raising their voices, while praying behind the Imaam, when the Imaam recites it. It specifically applies to those Salah (Prayers) during which Surah Fatiha is recited by the Imaam in a loud voice, such as the Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha prayers. Hadiths pertaining to this specific command by the Prophet also narrate that the Angels say Ameen when the Imam says Ameen. Hadiths also mention that if the Ameen by the Imaam and his followers coincide with the Ameen of the Angels, all the previous sins of the reciters of this word will be waived.

Difference of Opinion Among Different Schools of Thought (Jurisprudence)

  • The tradition of saying Ameen in a loud voice is strictly and widely practiced by the followers of the Shafi’i and Hanbali jurisprudences.
  • Some of the followers of Maliki Fiqh also follow this tradition.
  • According to the Hanafi Fiqh, reciting Ameen loudly in prayer is not recommended. So, followers of Hanafi Fiqh, in particular, do not say Ameen loudly during prayers. Some followers of Maliki Fiqh also practice not reciting it loudly.
  • The Shia scholars also hold that reciting Ameen loudly during prayer is not recommended.
