Islam is the final Divine religion, and the Quran is the last Divine revelation. The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, who is the seal of the Prophets. That means the guidance from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, for humanity has been completed, with the Prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, and the Divine Guidance, in the shape of the Quran. It also implies that Islam and the Quran, and the Prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, are not limited to any particular nation, civilization, or language. More importantly, these are not restricted to a certain time limit; these are for the entire humankind and for every generation, till the Day of Judgment.
In this context, it is also believed that the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ provide a complete code of life. Again, this complete code of life is not restricted to any specific generation, nation, language, or time; it will remain valid and relevant for all generations to come, till the end of this Universe. But a very important and sensitive question, often raised around the world, is why the Quran was revealed in Arabic; why not in another language?
In this article, we will explore why the Quran was revealed in Arabic.
Why Arabic?
It is believed that there are 6,000 to 7,000 languages currently in use worldwide. Although it is not humanly possible to comprehend, it is also believed that more than 50,000 languages have gone extinct since the world was created. It is believed that more than 81% of the world’s languages have already vanished. These statistics obviously reflect the importance of language, especially for a Divine Book, which has to remain the main source of guidance for all of humanity for generations to come, from its revelation till the end of this universe, i.e., the Day of Judgment.
It means the final Divine Book must be in a language that has qualities, such as:
- It must be a language that is easy to read and understand across the world
- It must be concise (brief, short, and summarizing)
- It must have a comprehensive expression
- It must have multiple layers of meaning within a single word
- It must be rhetorically powerful
- It should have a distinct literary style
- It must have the capacity to communicate precisely
- It must be capable of clearly communicating legal and theological concepts
- And above all, it must be a living language, which may last till the end of this world, and that too with the same verbal expression, without any modifications or alterations.
Linguists agree that Arabic is one of the languages that fully complies with the above parameters.
Reasons for Revealing the Quran in Arabic
The question of why the Quran was revealed in Arabic might be answered in many ways; one of which has been explained above. Arabic is a language that has been spoken for centuries, and more importantly, still in the same way of expression, without any major modification or deviation.
Why it was revealed in Arabic can be explained basically in two different contexts: religious beliefs (which are also the prime reason for the Arabic Quran) and logical reasons.
Religious Beliefs (Basic Reasons)
1. It is Decreed by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ
For a true believer (Muslim), it is quite sufficient that Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Himself commanded that the Quran is sent down in Arabic, so that it can be understood by people, as mentioned in the 3rd verse of Surah Az-Zukhruf.
Translation – Certainly, we have made it a Quran in Arabic, so perhaps you will understand.
So, as a Muslim, it is a part of our faith that Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ is All-Knowing, All-Wise; hence, sending down the Quran in Arabic must be beneficial for humankind. The Divine wisdom behind choosing the Arabic language for the Quran is also reflected in the linguistic richness of Arabic. It holds a rich vocabulary and grammatical structure. It is a sophisticated language, where expressions can be made precisely with refined meanings. Unlike other languages, writing a specific word needs less space and fewer characters. Above all, one Arabic expression sufficiently covers all relevant meanings.
2. The Language of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ was Arabic
The Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ was sent to the Arab nation, the present-day Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Arabic was the language of the tribes living in this part of the world. Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ sends Prophets to a nation, who speak the same language as their audience. The immediate audience of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, was Arabs, whose native language was Arabic. This has been made clear in the 4th verse of Surah Ibrahim, as follows:
Translation – We never sent a messenger who did not speak the tongue of his people, that he may explain to them distinctly.
The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, and his language, as well as that of his immediate audience, was Arabic. That’s why it was necessary that the language of the Quran must be Arabic, as is also narrated in the 3rd verse of Surah Az-Zukhruf. The subject is also explained in the 44th verse of Surah Fussilat as follows:
Translation – If we had made it a discourse in an obscure tongue, they would have said: “Why were its revelations not expounded distinctly? A foreign tongue and an Arab (audience)?”
This verse explains that Arabic was the language of the initial and immediate audience of the Quranic revelations; hence, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ revealed it in the Arabic language so the Meccans (Arabs) could understand it without any confusion or difficulty.
Logical Reasoning
1. Arabic is a Living Language
The Quran was sent down as the last and final revelations from Allah, سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, hence it must have been sent in a language that might last till the end of this universe. Arabic is not only one of the oldest languages of the world, but it is still a lively language. Today, more than 250 million people speak and understand this language. It happens to be the 6th most-spoken language across the world. The best part of the Arabic language is that despite a lapse of more than 14 centuries since the revelation of the Quran, there has been no major or even minor modification or alteration in it. The Arabic used in the Quran is still the same, as the majority of Arabs speak, write, and understand it.
These qualities of Arabic have preserved the original text of the Quran. Unlike other Divine Books, the Quran comprises the exact words and expressions, as were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, more than 14 centuries ago. Other Divine books, which were revealed in languages like Hebrew, could not be preserved mainly because these languages have either vanished or are near extinction, and more importantly, their expressions, vocabulary, and composition have changed drastically over the years.
Hence, the revelation of the Quranic verses in Arabic has played a key role in its preservation. It was also promised by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, as mentioned in the 9th verse of Surah Al-Hijr.
Translation – We have sent down this Exposition, and We will guard it.
2. The Uniformity Across Muslims is Marked by the Arabic Language
Islam, although initially introduced in Arab, rapidly became a global religion. As of today, there are around 55 countries that follow Islam as their declared official religion, apart from many other countries where Muslims are in the minority. Almost 25% of the total population of the world are Muslims. Currently, more than 2 billion Muslims are living in different parts of the world.
Arabic is the language that connects this entire Muslim population, scattered across the world. It has, in fact, attained the status of a religious language for Muslims, as all obligatory and optional prayers are performed in Arabic. All religious and personal supplications are made in Arabic. The second major source of guidance for Muslims is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, which was compiled by earlier scholars in Arabic, known as Hadith collections.
That makes Arabic one of the major sources of uniformity across the Muslim world. It is a binding force that connects the entire Muslim world together.
3. The Literary Miracle of the Quran is Tied to Arabic
The Quran is claimed to be one of the greatest miracles. Its language and syntax excellence could not be matched or copied, even by the then-famous and finest poets and literary personalities. Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ challenged them to produce even a single verse, similar to the Quran, as mentioned in the 23rd verse of Surah Al-Baqarah.
Translation – If you are in doubt of what We have revealed to Our votary, then bring a Surah like this, and call any witness, apart from God, you like, if you are truthful.
This challenge is deeply connected with the Arabic language, specifically used in the Quranic revelations.
4. There Had to be a Language of the Quran
The question of why the Quran is in Arabic has a direct logical answer; there had to be a language of the Quran. For discussion purposes, it can be said that if it were revealed in, say, Persian, then people would have raised the question of why it is revealed in Persian. So, the Quran had to be revealed in a language that could be easily understood by its first audience, who were Arabs. If it were revealed in some other language, the very purpose of its revelation would have been nullified because the audience would not have been able to understand what was being communicated to them.
FAQs
Why did Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ choose the Arabic language for the revelation of the Quran?
It is largely the Wisdom of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, as He is All-Knowing, and All-Wise. However, the prime reason for choosing Arabic as the language of the Quran was that it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, who was Arabic-speaking, and the initial and first audience of these revelations were also Arabs. So, the Quran was sent down in Arabic for better understanding by its first audience.
Is it permissible if I read only the translation of the Quran?
Reading the translation of the Quran in your native language is allowed in Islam. In fact, it is better for the reciter as they would be able to easily understand the Message of the Quran. However, reading the Arabic text of the Quran also holds great significance and rewards. Therefore, the best practice should be to recite it in Arabic text, side-by-side, reading its translation, so you can understand the meanings.
The Quran is in Arabic. Does it mean that Arabic is a sacred language?
According to the teachings of Islam, no nation or language is superior to others; it’s only their deeds that make them superior to others. Arabic is considered an honored language, just due to the fact that it was chosen as the language of the Quran. It does not mean that the Arabic language is sacred or superior to other languages.
Is it compulsory for me to learn Arabic to be a perfect Muslim?
There is no such compulsion for a Muslim to be able to speak or read Arabic fluently. They only need to be able to read the Quranic Verses in Arabic. Moreover, other worship and supplications are mostly performed in Arabic; hence, a basic expertise in reading the Arabic supplications and the Quranic verses must be attained by a Muslim so that they can perform their religious obligations smoothly.
Is it true that translations of the Quran can lead to a different meaning?
Translation of the Quran needs extreme care, wisdom, and vigilance. Translating any text from one language to another often conveys the general meanings. Even in that case, a slight mistake can alter the actual perspective of the Quran. On the other hand, translations often do not fully replicate the essence of the actual text, because some linguistic and spiritual notes may not reflect perfectly in translations. In this context, it is advisable to read Tafsir alongside the Quran translation for a better understanding. There are so many renowned Quran Commentators who have compiled perfect or near-perfect translations and Tafsirs that can be consulted.
